How Japan Clothing Sizes Work
Japan uses two distinct sizing systems. Women's clothing follows the 号 (gō) number system — odd numbers from 5 to 17, where 9号 is the most common "standard" size. Men's clothing uses letter sizes similar to the US (S, M, L), but with LL instead of XXL and 3L/4L for extended sizes.
The key rule: Japan sizes run one full size smaller than US sizes. A Japan Medium fits like a US Small. This is because Japanese sizing is based on JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards) body measurements, which assume a smaller average frame than US standards.
Beyond the size label difference, Japan-market garments are often cut slightly shorter in the sleeves and hem. If you're tall or long-armed, you may want to size up two when buying from Japanese brands.

Uniqlo is the most popular Japanese clothing brand globally. In their US stores, they relabel sizes to match US expectations — so a Uniqlo US "M" is already adjusted. But if you're ordering from Uniqlo Japan directly, size up one.
