Levi's Jeans Size Conversion
Levi's sizes jeans by waist inches, not letter or generic international sizes. Women's jeans run W24-W34 (plus sizes extend to W34-W44 as 16W-26W), each paired with a US numeric size on Levi's own chart, from 00/0 up to 18/20. Men's jeans also use waist inches, and Levi's own international conversion table doesn't use one single number worldwide: a Levi's/US waist of 30-31 maps to France/Italy 40/42, Germany 30/31, Spain 76, and UK 30/31 — Germany and the UK reuse your waist number, France and Italy run about 10 higher, and Spain lists a size in centimeters. Levi's publishes no single EU number for women's jeans at all, since France, Germany, and Italy diverge — use your waist measurement and the numeric table above instead of hunting for one EU conversion.
Understanding Levi's Fit Types
Levi's uses a numbered system for their fits. Popular women's styles: 501 Original (straight, high rise), 711 Skinny (mid rise), 721 High Rise Skinny, 724 High Rise Straight, and Ribcage (super high rise). Popular men's styles: 501 Original (straight, regular rise), 505 Regular (straight, sits at waist), 511 Slim, 512 Slim Taper, and 502 Taper. The fit name doesn't change the waist measurement, but rise and leg shape differ. If you wear a 32 waist in 501s, you'll also be a 32 in 511s — but the 511s will feel more fitted through the thigh.
Do Levi's Jeans Shrink?
Raw and unwashed Levi's denim (like Shrink-to-Fit 501s) will shrink approximately 1-2 inches in the waist and 2-3 inches in length after the first wash. Pre-washed Levi's — which is most of what they sell today — will have minimal shrinkage. If buying Shrink-to-Fit, size up 1-2 inches in the waist and 3 inches in the inseam. For all other Levi's jeans, buy your measured size. Denim stretches slightly with wear, so a snug fit out of the box will loosen to a comfortable fit within a few wears.
