How we verify requirements

Every requirement on this site comes from an official notice, and every form page shows where. This page explains how we check, how we keep checking, what the tools can and cannot promise, and how you can confirm for yourself that your file is not uploaded.

Where the numbers come from

Only from official notices: documents published by the authority that runs the exam or the application, on its own website. We do not copy sizes from coaching sites, forums or other tools, and we do not guess. Every form page quotes the sentence its numbers come from, links the document, and shows the date we read it.

  • Every workflow needs a source. A workflow cannot be published without at least one: an https link on an official website, the sentence it quotes (at most 300 characters) and the date we read it. An automated test checks this, and today it accepts links on gov.in, nic.in, ac.in, ibps.in, sbi.co.in and sbi.bank.in.
  • Centimetres are converted, and we say so. When a notice gives a size in centimetres, we turn it into pixels at the dpi the notice states and allow ±2% for rounding. The page tells you when a pixel size is our conversion and not a number the notice states.
  • Conflicting numbers are all shown, and we say which one we use. When a notice contradicts itself, we show every reading and say which numbers your file is checked against. When one value satisfies both readings, such as the range they share or the stricter limit, we use that. We never invent a number that no reading supports.

How often we re-check

Each workflow has a review date: the day by which we will read its notice again. After that date has passed, the page shows this warning above the tool: "These numbers were last checked on [date] and were due for review by [date]. They may have changed — confirm on the official notice before you apply." From then on the page stops telling you that your file is good to go. It says only that your file matches the numbers shown, which may be out of date.

Your browser works this out from today's date, so the warning appears even if we have not rebuilt the site since. A test that runs on every change to the site also fails when any workflow is past its review date, so we either re-check it or remove its spec file.

What we check — and what we don't

  • File type. You can add a JPG, PNG or WebP of up to 25 MB. A file we have to change is saved as a JPG. A file that already fits is handed back as you gave it, unless you crop it, clean up a signature, or it is a turned photo that we have to save upright.
  • Pixels. The width and height in pixels, when the notice sets them. We scale the picture, and crop it when the notice sets both sides, and never stretch it.
  • File size. The size in KB, kept inside the notice's limits however a KB is counted (1,000 or 1,024 bytes).

We do not check what the picture shows, such as the background, the face position, the date of a photo or whose signature it is. A portal may check these too, and only the portal can accept or reject your upload, so we never guarantee acceptance. Always confirm the numbers on the official notice.

How to confirm your file is not uploaded

No part of your file is sent to our servers, and you do not have to take our word for it. Your browser can show every request a page makes. These steps are easiest on a computer. You can also turn on airplane mode once a tool page has loaded and then fix a file: it still works, because the fixing happens on your device.

  1. Open your browser's developer tools: press F12, or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows and Linux) or Cmd+Option+I (Mac). In Safari, first turn on its developer features in Settings, under Advanced.
  2. Open the Network tab and clear it with its clear button, so you only see what happens next.
  3. Fix a file with any tool on this site: choose your file, then press Fix my file.
  4. Look at the list. You will see a few requests to api.whatismysize.com: they are the anonymous counts described in the Privacy Policy. You may also see small OPTIONS requests to the same address: they are your browser asking permission before it sends the real one. None of them carries your image. Click one of the others and read what it sent: Payload in Chrome and Edge, Request in Firefox, and in Safari Headers and then Request Data (there is no tab called Request). It holds a few short text fields, and no file, no file name and no pixel size.
  5. Check how much each of them sent: under Request Headers, Content-Length is a few hundred bytes. A photo or signature would be thousands of bytes at the very least, and usually tens of kilobytes or more. (The Size column shows what came back, not what was sent.) If you have turned analytics off, or your browser sends Do Not Track, you will see no requests to api.whatismysize.com. (Rows that start with blob: are your own file being shown on the page, not the network.)

Corrections

If a number looks wrong or out of date, tell us through the contact form and choose "A requirement looks wrong or out of date". We check your report against the official notice and correct the page if you are right.

Independence

WhatIsMySize is not affiliated with any examination body or government agency. We name an exam or an authority only to describe which requirement a page covers, and we use no logos. The site is free to use and carries no advertising or affiliate links.

Workflows we have verified

Every workflow we publish, read from the same data as the pages themselves. Open one to see its numbers, the sentences they come from and the links to the official notices.
