The numbers below come from the official notice. Each source is quoted as we read it.

  • Photo

    JPG200–530 × 260–690 px5–600 KB

    Official item: 'Photograph'. Colour passport-size photograph, 3.5 cm width x 4.5 cm height (no dpi stated); JPEG/JPG; pixel resolution minimum 200 x 260 and maximum 530 x 690 (written 'W x H' on the page without labels; read as width x height); file size minimum 5 kB (stated on the website only) and maximum 600 kB. Aspect ratio minimum 0.66 and maximum 0.89 (the page does not define which side divides which). After cropping, the face must cover 60-70% of the image (website twice, brochure 6.7 fifth bullet; the brochure's first photograph bullet says 30-35%, see the other readings below). White background, frontal view looking into the camera showing forehead, eyes, nose and chin; no caps, hats or sunglasses; normal spectacles allowed if there is no glare. The brochure adds: latest photo not older than 3 months. The Admit Card and Score Card carry this photograph.

  • Photo (live capture)

    Taken live on the portal

    Captured live during registration (not a file upload): use a computer with a webcam or a phone with a front camera of at least 5 MP (brochure: 'phone with 5 MP camera'), in a well-lit area. Candidates with disabilities (specifically visual impairments) who experience issues with live facial capture should contact helpdesk@gate.iitm.ac.in (GOAPS guideline page).

  • Signature

    JPG250–580 × 80–180 px3–300 KB

    Official item: 'Signature'. JPEG/JPG; pixel resolution minimum 250 x 80 and maximum 580 x 180 (written 'W x H' on the page without labels; read as width x height); file size minimum 3 kB (stated on the website only) and maximum 300 kB. Aspect ratio (height : width) of 1 : R with R between 2.75 and 3.75; after cropping, the signature must cover 70-80% of the image. Black or dark blue ink only, signed by the applicant only. The page's 'not acceptable' sample captions: dark background, ALL CAPITAL, digital signature, other ink colours, too small, initials, not clearly visible, background or write-up, outside the signature box or not horizontal.

The notice also says:

  • Face coverage: the Information Brochure (6.7, first photograph bullet) says 30-35% of the photograph; the website says 60-70% in both places and the brochure's own fifth bullet says 60-70% after cropping (not checked by this tool; shown for transparency) Upload a good quality, color photograph of passport size (3.5 cm width × 4.5 cm height) with the face of the candidate covering 30-35% of the photograph.
  • Also required (not handled by this tool) Scanned copy of valid photo Identity Document (ID) (the same ID, in original, MUST be produced while appearing for GATE 2027) | If the details are spread over two pages (that is, backside of the Photo ID) then both (front and backside) pages in a single PDF must be uploaded. | Category (SC/ST) certificate, if applicable, in PDF format to be uploaded to Digilocker. Create a folder named 'GATE2027' . Upload category(SC/ST) certificates as CATEGORY.pdf | Scanned copy of UDID (preferred)/PwD Certificate, if applicable, in PDF format to be uploaded in 'GATE2027' folder created in Digilocker. The file to be named as UDID_CERT.pdf or PWD_CERT.pdf respectively. | Scanned copy of Appendix-B1 or Appendix-B2 or Dyslexic Certificate (whichever is applicable) compile with PwD certificate as a single pdf document and upload in the same drive as PWD_CERT.pdf | Please ensure that each file is uploaded to the DigiLocker Drive under the 'GATE2027' folder with the specified file name. The file size should be between 10 KB and 600 KB.

What we check — and what we don't

  • File type. The file you download is a JPG.

  • Pixels. The width and height in pixels, when the notice states them. We scale the picture, and crop it when the notice sets both sides, and never stretch it.

  • File size. The size in KB, kept inside the notice's limits however a KB is counted.

We do not check what the picture shows, such as the background, the face position, the date of a photo or whose signature it is. A portal may check these too, and only the portal can accept or reject your upload. We are not affiliated with Indian Institute of Technology Madras (organising institute of GATE 2027): always confirm the numbers on the official notice.

How to fix your file

  1. Pick what you are uploading, then choose or drop your JPG, PNG or WebP file (up to 25 MB). It is read on your device.
  2. Press Fix my file. We scale, crop and compress it until it fits the official numbers above.
