How to Measure Your Shoe Size at Home
All you need is paper, a pen, and a ruler. Follow these 6 steps for an accurate measurement in under 5 minutes.
Gather your materials
You'll need a piece of paper larger than your foot, a pen or pencil, a ruler or measuring tape, and a hard flat surface. Don't measure on carpet.
Quick test: Make sure the paper extends past your heel and longest toe.
Stand on the paper with full weight
Wear the type of socks you'll use with the shoes. Stand with your full weight on both feet — your foot spreads under load, and sitting measurements will be too small.
Quick test: Rock forward and back to settle your natural stance.
Mark your heel and longest toe
Have someone else mark, or carefully do it yourself. Place the pen vertically at the very back of your heel, then at the tip of your longest toe (which isn't always the big toe).
Quick test: Make sure the pen is straight up and down, not angled.
Measure the distance in centimeters
Measure from the heel mark to the toe mark. Round up to the nearest half centimeter. This is your foot length — the number you'll use in size charts.
Quick test: Measure both feet. If they differ, use the larger measurement.
Measure in the afternoon
Feet swell throughout the day, expanding by 3-5mm. An afternoon measurement gives you the size your shoes actually need to be. Morning measurements can lead to shoes that feel tight by evening.
Quick test: If you measured in the morning, add 3mm to your result.
